Project 3 Learning Outcome 3
In class we have read many different articles, poems, and narratives, while in some cases we were to respond to them as well. Two articles in particular that we analyzed and worked with this semester are “The End of Food” by Lizzie Widdicombe and “Can Planet Earth Feed 10 Billion People?” by Charles Mann. In these readings we were asked to engage into the text and pull out important information or ideas that we find interesting. A way to do this affectively is to annotate and take notes/highlight the specific ideas throughout the text.
For the article by Widdicombe I annotated many pages that had phrases or sentences that I believe were important to draw out. My approach on annotating is to write an questions or ideas that I find interesting, basically what I am doing is creating a response already while I am reading whilst still paying attention to the article. A specific example of what I have annotated in this article is when Rob Rhinehart (the subject of Widdicombe) stated that his fridge was empty and the only thing he used was a blender. I annotated and questioned this idea, I then used this as an example in my response essay.
The ability to draw ideas from the article and weave into the discussion has improved and allowed me to expand on my writing. As a class we were never instructed on what we have to highlight or annotate, because we choose what we believe is interesting and what is important to use in their response or writing. I give the importance to the writings I analyze by giving it a deeper meaning.
